Beach Yoga and Surfing Day


The numerous benefits of having a regular yoga practice have been written about and expounded on many occasions. Yoga’s ability to calm the mind, create body awareness and aid in the rehabilitation of injuries are second to none. I have found however that one of the great by-products of having a regular yoga practice is that it prepares the body and mind to take on any of the other challenges and physical activities that we choose to attempt through the course of our lives.


In this regard we at Shades of Yoga offer a day of beach yoga, cross training and surf lessons to the students as a way for them to not only un-plug for a day from the rigours of successfully completing their RYT 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training, but also as a way for them to truly appreciate the diversity of benefits one can receive from a strong, daily yoga practice. Few can deny the feeling of achievement, the sense of freedom and joy that comes from riding a wave. However, surfing is not an easy sport to get the hang of, as it requires strength, balance, timing and perseverance, but the rewards are substantial.

100_0230The Beach Day takes place at the stunning Seminyak Beach on the south western cost of Bali where every morning seems to be as breathtakingly beautiful as the picture on a postcard. We use the incredible KU DE TA Restaurant as our base for the day, lapping up the beach front location, delicious food and chilled vibes.



The day starts with an hour of cross-training and beach yoga and then moves onto the surf lessons hosted by our fully accredited surfing coach. Lessons include lectures on ocean safety, surf gear familiarisation and then most importantly, we spend a good few hours in the water learning how to catch waves and ride them! Without a doubt the people I have had on my surf lessons that pick it up the quickest, and get the most out of the day, are those that have been involved in Shades of Yoga’s 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training. They posses all the physical requirements needed to make a success of surfing, but most importantly also show the patience and application of knowledge required, and i can honestly attribute this to the fact that they all partake in a daily yoga practice.
