Gentle in Merriam-Webster’s dictionary means “free from harshness, sternness, or violence”. Thus, this relates very well with the concept of ahimsa – non-violence which is the first Yama in Patanjali’s eight limbs of Yoga. Being gentle sometimes is seen as being non-aggressive as well as passive. But this is not fully true, as being gentle can also imply being persistent in a non-violent way.

When we are lost in the violent tunnel, we are drawn away from the actions, behaviours, and thoughts that previously allowed us to live a happier and more balanced life.

We can’t have a fast and furious transformation, we must allow ourselves to adapt and adjust. We must allow ourselves to slowly change our habits and then work them into our lives. We deserve the time and space, a gentle path allows to notice what we are moving forward, and to enjoy the small steps that we otherwise miss.

Although it might seem dull, there is actually much joy along the gentle path. Once you take the first step, you can breathe, enjoy the view, and have a fresh start each time.

With moving too fast, our mind gets distracted and we miss much of what is right in front of us.

As a result, we cannot see the “truth”. We can stay stuck in a suffering pattern. When we move slowly and gently, we might even enter the wonderful phase of mindfulness. Enter the realm of being aware of the present and cultivate the feeling of contentment. With this magic happening, we lessen our desire to grasp at life and just accept, be here and now.

I love the paragraph in Island book by Aldus Huxley:

“It’s dark because you are trying too hard.
Lightly child, lightly. Learn to do everything lightly.
Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.
Just lightly let things happen and lightly cope with them.
So throw away your baggage and go forward.
There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet, trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair.
That’s why you must walk so lightly. Lightly my darling… “

So breathe and lay back. No need to rush. Just live life gently and with light.
Remove all of our and others suffering gently.
Enjoy your gentle transformation.
