As a yogi, practicing saucha (purity of the body and mind) one must try a variety of cleansing procedures, both mental and physical, targeting specific results with a goal in mind. Recently, during a RYT 200 hour course at Shades of Yoga we decided to try an Epsom Salt liver/gallbaldder flush to rid the body of gallbladder stones and flush the digestive system.
Be sure to purchase epsom salt produced with the purpose of being ingested, not bathing. Below are the details:
2pm – Do not drink or eat anything after 2pm
6pm – Mix 1 tablespoon of epsom salt with a glass of water and drink
8pm – Mix 1 tablespoon of epsom salt with a glass of water and drink
94:5pm– Mix half a cup of olive oil with half a cup of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice drink- Lie down on your back immediately after drinking the juice and oil
6am – Mix 1 tablespoon of epsom salt with a glass of water and drink
8am – Finish with 1 more tablespoon of salt and water and drink
10am – Freedom to eat and drink again, however light food and fruit are recommended to start with.
In my opinion, the hardest part of the cleanse was fasting the day of the flush. The first two doses of epsom salt were salty to say the least but not unbearable. I found that my body began to flush its system around 9pm. The grapefruit juice and olive oil mixture turned out to be quite tasty. Although I did have an urge to go to the bathroom after 9:45pm, I resisted. My stomach felt uncomfortable throughout the night, I had to focus to not turn on my side. Waking up at 6am was unpleasant but by 8am I was wide awake from running to the toilet so many times. The next day my stomach was iffy but overall I felt good and truly believe this cleanse was beneficial. I didn’t physically check for gallbladder stones but I do think some were passed. I know my system was flushed and the added benefit was that my abs looked great the next morning!
The Epsom salt cleanse is not for everybody, Shades of Yoga recommends one do their research and follow exact directions for results. However, drinking epsom salt can provide several other health benefits such as easing constipation, ridding the body of toxins to better absorb nutrients, preventing the hardening of arteries and blood clots, balancing electrolyte levels and increasing the effectiveness of insulin.
