How to Become a Certified Yoga Teacher in 2022

If how to become a certified yoga teacher is on your bucket list for 2022, you’ve come to the right place! There has never been a better moment to become a certified yoga teacher. Yoga teacher training is now more accessible than ever, and there are numerous options available to you. Finding a yoga teacher training program that suits your needs and connects with you is difficult.

Yoga Teacher Training History

Before we dive into how to become a certified yoga teacher in 2022, let’s take a step back in history. Yoga is an ancient technique that has been practised for thousands of years. During the Vedic period, dedicated yoga students would go to the ashram with their yoga teachers to learn. It was unclear how long it would take to become a yoga teacher. The interaction between yoga students and yoga teachers was significantly different than it is now. It was a tight relationship, and students adored their guru or teacher.

While at the ashram, students would serve their teacher in any capacity the teacher desired, usually by caring for the animals, the land, or even making food. The learning process was not complete until the teacher felt the learner was ready.

As yoga spread to the Western hemisphere, the nature of the student/teacher interaction began to shift. Krishnamacharya, known as the “Father of Modern Yoga,” had three disciples primarily responsible for introducing yoga to the United States. They were B.K.S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, and Indra Devi. B.K.S. Iyengar emphasized alignment and introduced us to the usage of props. Ashtanga was introduced to us by K. Pattabhi Jois.

Indra Devi taught Hatha yoga in its purest form. In addition to these three disciples, Krishnamacharya’s son, T.K.V. Desikachar, was responsible for introducing his own type of yoga, Viniyoga, to the West.

When these kinds of yoga arrived in the West, yoga practitioners were eager to take their practice to the next level. Many of them aspired to be yoga teachers. Iyengar, Jois, and Devi all collaborated extensively with students. Maty Ezraty, for example, studied with K. Pattabhi Jois. Students of Iyengar, Jois, and Devi would eventually go on to hold their own yoga teacher training, as Maty did. The 200-hour yoga teacher training approach was born in 1999, shortly before the official creation of Yoga Alliance.

The 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Model

Surprisingly, a few participants concluded that 200 hours would be the very minimum amount of time a person should have to study to become a yoga instructor. Dean Ornish, MD, wrote a medical report in which he discovered that yoga and meditation can help reverse the damage caused by heart disease. As a result, many medical practitioners and their staff wanted to become certified yoga teachers to offer this practice to their patients.

The 200-hour program was deemed adequate for this specific demographic who had already completed medical school and had a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology.

Yoga is an uncontrolled industry. You do not need permission from the government or a license to teach yoga. There is no governing board that regulates yoga teachers or yoga schools. Instead, we have the Yoga Alliance. Yoga Alliance is a Virginia-based organization that attempts to provide self-regulation for those of us in the yoga community.

The concept is that if we control ourselves by developing our own norms and adhering to them as a society, there will be no need for government intervention. At least, that’s how it seemed to me many years ago. Yoga Alliance accepted the 200-hour yoga teacher training methodology.

Yoga Alliance Registration Options for Yoga Teachers

How to Become a Certified Yoga Teacher in 2022

If you’ve been wondering how to become a certified yoga teacher in 2022, look no further. The following are the steps to becoming a certified yoga teacher:

1) Determine whether you want to enrol in a 200-hour or 500-hour yoga teacher training program.

You can become a 200-hour yoga teacher or a 500-hour yoga instructor. Even if you pursue becoming a 500-hour yoga teacher, you can start with a 200-hour yoga teacher training program and then complete a 300-hour yoga teacher training program later to become a 500-hour yoga teacher.

For various reasons, we recommend starting with the 200-hour fundamental course. It is incredibly beneficial to do the 200-hour yoga teacher training first and allow yourself some time and space to digest everything you learn before moving on to the more advanced 300-hour yoga teacher training.

The 300-hour yoga teacher training is more beneficial after you’ve been teaching for a few years. You will have established your own teaching style and discovered themes that you are enthusiastic about, which may affect your 300-hour teacher training decision.

Another reason we recommend starting with the 200-hour yoga teacher training is that 500 is a huge amount of time in one go, and you might want to split the 500 hours between two different teachers to have a broader knowledge foundation.

We greatly emphasized asana and alignment during our initial 200-hour training. Our second 200-hour training included a lot of yoga philosophy. When we completed our first 300-hour training, We wanted an anatomy-based program because neither of my previous 200-hour training experiences was particularly strong in anatomy. You will miss out on this possibility if you take all 500 hours from the same teacher simultaneously.

2) Determine whether or not you should train with a Yoga Alliance Registered School.

The 200-hour yoga teacher certification is the entry-level certification for yoga teachers. This is the first leap toward becoming a yoga teacher. As previously indicated, you can begin with a 200-hour program or jump directly into the 500-hour program.

You are not required to choose a Yoga Alliance Registered School unless you wish to register with Yoga Alliance. Many studios and other organizations prefer teachers who are Yoga Alliance certified. Thus many yoga teachers choose to register for that reason. They also offer a variety of complimentary classes and helpful information to yoga teachers and discounts on items and services that yoga teachers are likely to use, and they advocate for yoga teachers.

If you decide to join Yoga Alliance, make sure that the school you choose is a Yoga Alliance Registered School.

Yoga Alliance has registrations for yoga teachers and registrations for yoga schools. There are RYS 200 (200-hour Registered Yoga Schools), RYS 300 (300-hour Registered Yoga Schools), RYS 500 (500-hour Registered Yoga Schools), RCYS (Registered Children’s Yoga Schools) and lastly RPYS (Registered Prenatal Yoga Schools). You are able to verify a school on the Yoga Alliance website, www.yogaalliance.org. Each school has its own Registered School Profile.
