The Tirta Empul temple is a Hindu Balinese water temple which consists of aExperience a Water purification ceremony at Tirta Empul bathing structure. Famous for its holy spring water where Balinese Hindus are known to go for ritual purification.
The Hindu Temple is located in Tampa Siring north of Ubud, and was founded in 926 AD. The temple is famous for Melukat purification rituals and has several holy springs, which are said to have been created by The God Indra and believed to be blessed water that could purify those who bathe there.
Tirta Empul is dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu God of water.
The temple includes shrines to Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma, as well as one for Indra and Mount Batur. It is considered one of the five most holy temples in all of Bali and is considered one of the holiest water sources in Bali. In fact, the word Tirta in the Indonesian language directly translates to holy water.
What is the meaning of Melukat?
Melukat derives from the old Javanese word “lukat” which means to “cleanse” or “purify” while the Indonesian meaning is “to let go” or release something within us.
You will have a day of venturing off into the the Manukaya village situated in the heart centre of Bali. This is where you will enter into the Tirta Empul temple for the water purification ceremony.
Just as at other temples and sacred sites around the island, you will need to wear a ‘sarong’ before entering the premises.
This sacred space of worship, healing and releasing is felt as a vibrant and precious energy that courses through the entirety of your auric body. Crafting your own personal offering, and meaning of what intentions you wish to take with you and what you wish to let go of and is symbolic to purifying body, mind and soul.
What is the true meaning of ritual?
In my own experience with ritual and ceremony I feel it is important to understand the meaning and symbolism behind the word ritual. It is important to understand so that you too, can pull out the intentions from the wisdom of your heart and derive meaning from your personal experience.
The definition of ritual is the established form for a ceremony specifically in the order of words that hold the qualities of devotion and selfless acts of service.
Ritual is a rite of passage that is to be respected and understood, and constitutes a series of acts regularly repeated in a set precise manner.
Many rituals also provide psychological comfort during times of hardship, and after they become common practice, they help to bring people together by reinforcing a sense of community.
We are honoured to take you into this special experience
During your 200 hour YTT at Shades of Yoga in Ubud Bali. We will enter the inner courtyard, which is the main area of the temple.
This is the holy grail of natural spring water bubbling up into a large, crystal-clear pool where the high frequency of water dances in delight and gushes out of 30 water spouts into the two sacred purification pools.
The pools are waist deep, and as mentioned above, we will be wearing a special sarong for ceremony and ritual. We will start in the pool on the left side where the cleansing ritual begins as you dip your head under the water spouts. This process is continued until you have cleansed yourself under each waterspout.
Behind the purification pools is the final section of the Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple, called the Jeroan. This inner courtyard is a pleasant place to visit and relax after the hustle and bustle of the purification pools. This is where people come to pray.

The front part of the courtyard is dominated by the large water spring that feeds the purification pools. The spring is filled with green algae and small fish swimming among the reeds. Behind the springs are large Hindu shrines that are brightly decorated in contrasts of colour.
The Balinese come here to pray wearing white starched clothing.
